  • How to Get Started: I have been waiting for a tutor match for a long time but haven’t received one. What should I do?
Please contact a member of the WNY Learning Lab Team by sending an email to hello@educatewny.org. There could be multiple reasons for this and we will help sort it out!
  • How To Get Started: How do I get connected to a tutor?
Congrats! And welcome to Educate NY! In your WNY Learning Lab acceptance email, there will be a button to "activate" your account. Clicking "activate" means your student application will be generated into your profile and then added to our queue for tutors to view and connect with. It can take up to 1 week for a tutor to connect with you. If you are waiting longer than 1 week for a connection, please contact us at hello@wnylearninglab.org. *If you're not sure if your account is activated, log in to your portal account using the email you used to enroll. Your portal account will indicate if your have a profile in the queue or note. Once a tutor connects with you, you will receive an email from WNY Learning Lab informing you of the connection and instructions to contact your tutor via our internal messaging system. You should message your tutor to work out a recurring schedule for the tutoring and the classroom you prefer to use. You will then log in to your WNY Learning Lab portal to receive tutoring on the date/time you agreed on!
  • How To Get Started: I was accepted as a student. How do I get started?
Congratulations on being accepted as a student with Educate NY! Once accepted as a student you will receive an email from us with instructions to activate your account. Please be sure use the activation link in your email, without using that link your student account will not be activated and you will not be connected to a tutor. Check out our helpful New Student Onboarding Video below. In this short video, you'll learn how to: Sign in to the Educate NY site Update your account settings, availability, and billing (if applicable) Update your student profile and add yourself to the queue Send and read messages to and from your tutor Join your tutor's classroom And more! This video will also be available to you at any time via the blue "Need Help" button on the right side of your portal.
  • How to Get Started: How do I use my tutor's calendar?
When connected to a tutor they will send you a link to their calendar of availability. This will allow you to select a date and time for a tutoring session. You're welcome to use the calendar to schedule your first session and establish that as a reoccurring session or use the calendar with your tutor weekly. Check out this helpful brief tutorial:
  • Tutor Connections: Am I able to request a new tutor?
Yes. The first step is to communicate this with your current tutor (if you have one), so it doesn’t come as a surprise to them. You can then release your tutor by logging into your Educate NY dashboard and clicking the button ‘release tutor.’ You will be asked the reason why you are releasing your tutor and if you would like to be added back to the queue. Select ‘yes’ to be added back to the queue and your profile will become visible for other tutors to match with.
  • Tutor Connections: What happens if I can’t make a tutoring session? Who do I tell?
Direct message or text your tutor! Please respect their time and let them know with at least 24 hours notice. Tutors are volunteering their time and you should let them know if you can’t make a tutoring session. We know that emergencies happen, but if you are regularly unresponsive or miss more than 1 session without communicating, your tutor will have the option to release you and you will not be added back to the list of students awaiting a tutoring connection to be connected with another tutor.
  • Tutor Connections: If I already know of a tutor, can I request to work with them?
Yes! As long as the tutor has the capacity we can connect you with them directly. Please reach out to Educate NY staff at hello@educatewny.org and we will help.
  • Tutor Connections: Is there a way to leave feedback about my tutoring sessions?
Yes, we would love that! We do our best to review all student feedback - positive or negative! From your Educate NY dashboard you will see a list of past sessions with a button next to each session labeled ‘feedback.’ Clicking that button will allow you to leave feedback for each session!
  • Preparing for Sessions: Can my student’s teacher contact their tutor?
Yes! The more people involved in helping the student succeed, the better! Please just communicate this with your tutor so they are aware.
  • Preparing for Sessions: What do I need to bring to my tutoring session?
Here is a checklist: A laptop/desktop computer with a microphone Headphones (optional) A quiet space to host the tutoring session. Something to write/take notes with. The school work or topics that your student needs help with, helpful to share with your tutor beforehand! A Parent/guardian should be nearby (especially if the student is younger).
  • Preparing for Sessions: Does a parent or guardian need to be around during the session?
Yes! It’s important so that if there are any technical issues, you can be around to help. And it’s also great for you to be around so that you feel comfortable with your student interacting with another person on the internet. We care about your student’s safety and if you are around, we feel like it is a much better atmosphere. If you aren’t able to be around every time, that’s ok. Once you get to know your tutor, you don’t have to be around at every session. But in the beginning, it’s important.

  • Preparing for Sessions: How do I access the online classroom?
To access this classroom, login to your Educate NY account and click on your dashboard. You can join your tutor’s classroom by clicking “Join Tutor's Classroom.” This will bring you to your tutor’s classroom waiting room, you will automatically enter the classroom once your tutor has started the session. We highly recommend testing your tutoring classroom BEFORE your first session. You may experience technical difficulties with some classrooms. Its important to ensure that your device and browser permissions allow for video and audio use. Your tutor may prefer to use an external platform such as Google Meets. This is OK. You can communicate with your tutor about the best way for you to connect.
  • Group Events: What is a group event?
Group events are a way for your student to step outside of the 1-on-1 help you'll receive. Our tutors will create group events in a number of subjects: reading, art, math, coding, etc. You can RSVP to these events and then attend alongside other Educate NY students. These sessions are a fun way to meet other students and explore fun activities outside of regular school. You can RSVP to a group event by logging in to your educatewny.org account and clicking on the "Group Events" link in the left sidebar. There, you will see a list of all upcoming group events. Click "Event Details" and you can then RSVP for the event. Make sure to add the start date to your calendar so you don't forget :)
  • Billing: Why does my account say I need to set up my billing?
This means that you indicated in your application that you were able to make a monthly donation ranging from $9-$30 per month for our Educate NY services. Please note this is a monthly donation and not based on frequency of service. In your account, you will see an option to set up your billing and you will be asked to input your credit card information. There will be a 2-week trial period where you will not be charged to ensure you are connected with a tutor and are happy with the service. You are able to cancel your monthly subscription at any time through the billing section of your Educate NY account.
  • Billing: Am I able to change my monthly payment?
Yes! If you are no longer in a place where you can afford to pay a monthly donation, we can adjust your account if you reach out to our Educate NY staff at hello@educatewny.org.
  • Billing: How do I cancel my subscription and leave Educate NY?
To cancel your subscription, login to your dashboard and select ‘billing > manage billing.’ From there you will be able to cancel your payment plan (if you have one). Please also be sure to release your tutor (and tell them that you are releasing them) and do NOT add yourself back to the queue to be connected with another tutor. If you do not have a monthly payment and you are not connected to a tutor, you are all set! Please let us know if you would like to return to LTB and we can reactivate your account and add your profile back to the queue to connect with a tutor!

  • Who are Educate NY's students?
Our students come from underserved, low-income communities. Many of our students are foster youth, homeless youth, students attending Title 1 schools, students receiving free or reduced lunch, and families on government assistance. Some students have IEPs or are diagnosed with a learning disability or behavior disorder. Furthermore, our students are mostly K-12 students from all around the US. At times, we accept students who are high school graduates awaiting college; however, we currently do not accept students in community college, taking remedial level college courses, or GED candidates. Although, we are working to expand our offerings to include college-level students. But at the moment, our volunteer tutors are primarily high school students, with a few from college and retirees, who can only accommodate students from grade levels high school and below.
  • Where is Educate NY located?
We're based in Buffalo, NY but we have a fully remote team with volunteers from all over the U.S! If you want the specifics, our mailing address is: 523 Main Street, Buffalo NY 14203 Our phone number is: +1 716-501-5374

  • Prospective Students: How often are tutors expected to meet with their students?
All of our tutors are volunteers and consist of high school students, college students, professionals, and retired professionals. Tutors are not expected to have direct experience teaching or tutoring, but they should be passionate about educational equity and working with students. Our tutors are expected to commit to 60-minute lessons 1-2x per week with their student/s for at least 4 months, although most tutors stay longer! Tutor and students create their own schedules based on what works for them both. Tutors are not expected to create professional and elaborate lesson plans, but if a student doesn’t have homework assignments or test prep, we expect tutors to put in the work and research ways to help their student. We expect tutors to be flexible, open-minded, patient, and empathetic. If a student needs more frequent tutoring than 2x per week, please let LTB know by sending us an email at hello@educatewny.org so we can try to help find the student a 2nd tutor.
  • Prospective Students: How much does Educate NY cost for families?
Educate NY has a ‘pay if you can’ model. If families are able to pay for our services we ask that they contribute a small monthly donation ranging from $9-$30 per month to help us expand our reach and serve more students. If families are unable to pay, that’s OK too. There is no obligation to pay and it has no bearing on the status of their application. If families do indicate that they are able to pay in their application, they will be asked to input their credit card information before they connect with a tutor.
  • Prospective Students: Who are the tutors on Educate NY?
All of our tutors are volunteers from around New York State. We have tutors ranging from 14 years old through retirees, but the majority of our tutors are high school and college students. All tutors are required to submit a video application in order to be accepted and tutors over 18 are required to pass a background check. Our tutors are passionate about educational equity. They don’t necessarily have direct experience teaching or tutoring, but they are committed to helping others and earning some community service hours in the process!
  • Prospective Students: What subjects can I get help in?
Currently, Educate NY work with students in general K-12 classes and ESL. In some cases, we can support in preparation for specific tests like the PSAT, SAT, and GED. It's important to note that Educate NY doesn't have a specific curriculum, and our tutors are not necessarily trained to tutor specific subjects. But they are intelligent, compassionate and hard-working volunteers. They find resources online to help students in the best way they know how for any of the exams your students need help with
  • Prospective Students: Can I enroll multiple children?
If you have multiple children who will benefit from the program, please note that you will need to submit a separate application for each child. We kindly ask that you use the same primary email address when filling out each application to ensure that the accounts are linked. This way, once all the students are accepted, your accounts will be automatically linked. As a result, you will only need one email/password combination to access all of your children's accounts.
